Red Fox: UK Status: Resident in the UK and also in most of the northern hemishere including Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America. Habitat: This fox can be found in many different habitats ranging from isolated countryside areas, through to areas occupied by humans, including towns an cities. Urban foxes have been increasing over the last few decades, mainly due to hunting for sport, and farmers with livestock who kill them like vermin. These animals are mainly nocturnal, and hunt and forage for food mainly during the hours of darkness. They are occasionally seen by day, especially at dawn and dusk. Their taste in food ranges from small mammals and birds which they hunt themselves, and ranges through to kitchen scraps left out for them, and scraps foragaged from bins and landfills. Breeding: Foxes make a set, or den usually in an embankment, or under the edge of a building. Vixens (females) give birth to a litter of about four to six young in the spring, she stays with them for about three weeks, until their young are able to thermo regulate for themselves. During this time the male (Tod) feeds the vixen, as do any infertile females in the pack. Comment: This fox is the largest of its genus, and has been a very persacuted animal almost throughout it's range. Although towns and cities are generally safer for foxes, many are run over, and die on our urban roads. |
